To resolve Fallout 3 performance issues on Windows 7 or 8, you should first ensure that you meet the game's minimum requirements and you have the latest NVIDIA or AMD graphics card drivers installed. Note: Fallout 3 is not optimized for Windows 7 and later operating systems.

Check your Display Settings

Bethesda is famous for releasing buggy games. Fallout 4, a Company’s latest release, is a complete mess. It crashes on and on when you install it on Windows 7, 8 and 10. And that’s a niggling concern. But, luckily, we’ve managed to find solutions for you.

Issues associated with launching and playing the game can often be resolved by changing the following display options:

  • Launch the game in Windowed Mode by selecting Options from the Fallout 3 Launcher and ticking the Windowed box under Mode.
  • If using dual monitors, disable your second one from your Windows display settings.
  • Ensure that the resolution of the game matches that of your display monitors by selecting Options from the Fallout 3 Launcher and selecting the correct resolution under Graphics Adapter and Resolution.

  1. Open your My Documents folder.
  2. Under My Games, open the Fallout 3 folder and select the fallout.ini file.
  3. In the fallout.ini file, find the following line: bUseThreadedAI=0.
  4. Change this line to read: bUseThreadedAI=1.
  5. Add another line after it that reads: iNumHWThreads=2.
  6. Run the game.
